HISTORY

In 1976 Noble and Greer Printers (operating since 1932) was purchased by Tom Hayward and Douglas Wakefield. The company's name was changed to Bayfield Printing Pty Ltd. Right from its inception the directors employed their core philosophy of 'investing in future technologies' into action by installing inhouse typesetting equipment. Such a bold move netted them the desired result of significantly reducing turnaround times and costs.

By 1979 the company had outgrown its premises and relocated to Castlemaine Street, Milton. This more centralised location, in conjunction with the spiralling demand for their typesetting services from external customers such as design agencies and print firms fuelled further growth. This demand resulted in the formation of a stand alone company called Abell Typesetting.

During the early nineties the desktop revolution had made its way to Australian shores and the technologically ready directors of Bayfield were there to welcome it with the installation of their first Macintosh computer. As time passed the Abell Typesetting operation was scaled down in favour of a more light weight Mac driven prepress division. Once again, costs were driven down and timeframes slashed as a result of the implementation of this now taken for granted technology.

In 1988 Bayfield purchased its own premises and relocated to Ross Street Newstead. In the ensuing years as Bayfield expanded and consolidated, the market was flooded with many infant technologies that promised to transform the print industry. By the mid 90s the printing industry was at a crossroads. Many firms chose to ignore these technologies claiming they were too experimental and others chose paths that led to their demise. Tom Hayward, the visionary at Bayfield, immersed himself in these new technologies. He conducted extensive research and testing and determined a new course for Bayfield - 'computer-to-plate' technology.

The old saying 'fortune favours the brave' could never have been more real when a single colour Shinohara 52 printing press that Bayfield had ordered, tumbled off a forklift to its demise at Brisbane docks. Instead of renewing the order, Tom rolled the dice again and upgraded the order to a 4 colour Shinohara! This press coupled with computer to plate technology transformed the printing industry. This pioneering spirit resulted in never seen before delivery timeframes and prices.

Over the next 10 years a total of 10 Shinohara printing presses (an Australian record) were installed, many of them firsts for Australia like the 5 colour Shinohara. Never one to rest on his laurels Tom strove for even faster turnaround times and installed another first - a 5 colour press with an inline aqueous coating tower. No longer did the press operator have to wait 30 minutes before they could print the reverse side of a job. No longer did the binding department have to wait for ink to set overnight before they could bind or finish jobs. Jobs were now being output at lightning speeds.

During this time another print revolution was stirring. Two words were being circulated throughout the industry, 'digital print'. Digital print promised riches to the innovators and doom to the dinosaurs. The 'starry eyed' in the industry implemented the technology immediately but soon discovered that it could not deliver what the marketing hype promised. Tom chose to watch and wait from the sidelines. He recognised this revolution for what it was. Digital printing would reshape the industry but only when the technology was more stable. To invest too early would have been perilous but to leave it too late would have seen the marketplace saturated with digital print providers. Year by year digital press technologies improved and when the time was right Tom played his hand and installed the HP INDIGO 5500 Digital Press.

This purchase mid 2007 triggered another relocation in order to provide room for the digital printing division. A site was chosen in the new industrial centre of Brisbane's north, Brendale and the premises and technology were made ready. The revolution continues to this day as Bayfield rolls its digital print mantra across Australia. Our most discerning clients have been recruited and the most sceptical are converted.
The future is right now at Bayfield.
